Manufacturers of dyes and pigments frequently purchase oleum to facilitate acid-catalyzed sulfonation reactions, creating sulfonated aromatic compounds that enhance colorfastness. In the chemical synthesis sector, oleum serves as a key reagent for producing industrial intermediates used in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
HSN code 28070020 is classified as Free under India's DGFT ITC(HS) export policy — no export license is required.

HSN Code Details
Oleum is a sulfuric acid solution that has been further reacted with additional sulfuric acid to produce a highly concentrated acid mixture, often containing 30–70% free sulfuric acid by weight. It is typically produced by dissolving sulfur dioxide in concentrated sulfuric acid under controlled temperature and pressure conditions.
When shipping oleum internationally, consignments must be packaged in corrosion‑resistant containers, such as stainless steel drums with double‑sealed lids, and the shipment must be accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis detailing pH, free sulfuric acid content, and any impurities.
